Get recommended by ChatGPT: how your brand gets named
By Kristian Stig Henriksen · Dear Future
You get visible in ChatGPT by being the source the assistant can most easily build its answer on: be present in the pages its web search finds, give the direct answer at the top, and appear correctly in the comparisons and mentions it cites. There is no paid shortcut into the answer itself. Here is how the selection works, and the five steps that move you from absent to recommended.

Why it matters who ChatGPT names
When a buyer asks an assistant for advice, they do not get a list to choose from but a recommendation. In Growth Memo's user study of AI Mode (April 2026), the AI's top pick became the buyer's top pick 74% of the time. Meanwhile search volume is moving to chatbots. The two or three brands named in the answer effectively split the customer between them; the rest are not part of the decision.
How ChatGPT picks who gets named
With web search switched on, ChatGPT fetches current pages through its search partner, reads them and writes one answer with citations to the sources it used. Three things decide who makes it in. Availability: the page must be crawlable and must not block the AI bots in robots.txt. Extractability: the model prefers sources where the answer to the question is stated clearly and completely, over pages where it has to be assembled. Consensus: if your brand appears consistently in the comparisons, directories and trade articles the search finds, that weighs more than what you say about yourself.
Without web search the model answers from its training. You cannot move that in the short term; what you can influence now is the search-based answers, and those are also the ones that cite sources.
ChatGPT SEO in practice: five steps
- Find the questions that decide your category. Not keywords, but whole buyer questions: “which solution fits…”, “what does … cost”, “who is best at…”. Those are what you should be measured on.
- Measure the starting point. Ask the questions with web search switched on, and note who gets named and cited today. The gaps are your prioritized work list.
- Build the most extractable page per question. Direct answer in the first sentences, questions as headings, facts that can be verified, and structured data matching the visible content.
- Win presence in the third-party sources. Make sure you are described correctly in the comparisons and overviews already being cited in your category. That is often faster than waiting for your own page to win.
- Measure daily, and let the curve judge. Answers vary day to day, so react to developments over weeks, not to one good or bad day.
The honest caveat
Nobody can guarantee a spot in an AI answer, and individual answers vary, even on the same day. What can be guaranteed is the process: knowing exactly which questions you are absent on, making your pages the easiest sources to use, and seeing the curve move when the work lands. If someone promises you fixed placements in ChatGPT, ask how they measure it.

Can you pay to be named in ChatGPT?
No. The answer itself and its recommendations cannot be bought; they are built from the model's training and the sources its web search finds. Any ads around the assistants are labeled as ads and are not the answer. The way into the answer is being the best source, not the highest bidder.
How long does it take to get visible in ChatGPT?
Search-based answers can change within weeks of better sources being available, because ChatGPT fetches current pages on every query. Expect weeks for the first mentions on long, specific questions, and months for the broad category questions. Measure daily so you can see when it happens instead of guessing.
Which pages does ChatGPT cite?
Typically pages where the answer is easy to extract: comparisons, guides, trade articles, documentation and directories, found through its web search. The model prefers sources that answer the question completely and precisely over front pages and campaign pages. That is why the best-structured page wins, not necessarily the biggest brand.
